Benefits of Blueberries

Gardening Is Good For You…  and Blueberries are one HUGE reason why!

It’s February and many of us have already given up on our New Year Resolutions to eat more healthy foods, lose weight and get fit. Plus, let’s face it, January can be hard on the wallet with the post Christmas bills coming in and all those little bills you put off paying until- uh oh – now. So when you’re wandering around the supermarket looking for healthy options that won’t break the bank blueberries often don’t even make it into the trolley! A tiny punnet of blueberries costs so much that many of us choose to go with honey with our porridge or natural yoghurt instead – oh yes, we are trying to eat healthy in the morning, just within reason 😉

Well, not any more! Here’s a thought – why not grow your own Blueberries and have freshly picked blueberries every day for a fraction of the cost!?

So what’s all the fuss about Blueberries?

Blueberries are high in antioxidants that neutralize free radicals thus help to protect us against many diseases including cancer and heart disease whilst also boosting brain health!

Here at Beechdale Garden Centre we have a variety of Blueberry plants on sale including :

  • Vaccinium Corymbosum ‘Northland’
  • Vaccinium Corymbosum ‘Emblue’
  • Vaccinium Corymbosum ‘Ama’
  • Vaccinium Corymbosum ‘Heerma’
  • Vaccinium Corymbosum ‘Bluejay’

How To Grow Blueberry Plants:

Blueberry plants are easy to grow. They like a slightly acidic soil so make sure to add some peat when planting. You can grow blueberries in the ground or in a container thus it’s a perfect fruit bearing plant for those with a smaller garden, patio or balcony.  Blueberry plants blossom from April /May with the berries ready for harvest  in July / August. The plant can be pruned if it grows too big but do so only after it has borne fruits. The blueberry will deliver every year if you look after it well.
